Solution: In addition to the standard formats that are available in the Format->Cell->Number options dialog, you can create your own, customized formats. A custom format has four components, separated by semicolons: ;;;. Excel will use the appropriate format component, depending on the value of the cell. See the on-line help (search for Customizing, Number Formats for more details).
