What about adding up minutes and seconds, and stopping the minutes from rolling over into hours?

Solution:
Make sure your data has a leading "0:", as in "0:10:23" for 10 minutes and 23 seconds. Then format your SUM cell as "[mm]:ss". This format will display "73:10" rather than
"1:13:10" for one hour, thirteen minutes, ten seconds.
