When you place the cursor to add text into an existing document

Solution:
Word defaults to Insert mode but it's fairly easy to accidentally switch to Overwrite mode, in which newly entered characters replace existing characters. This can happen if you inadvertently press the Insert key, so press that key again to return to Insert mode. You also can double-click the OVR entry on the Status bar at the bottom of the Word window to switch between the two modes.
