Solution:
Word uses a Startup folder to hold shortcuts for add-ins that load each time you launch the program. Trouble with these programs can prevent Word from loading, so clearing out the contents of the Startup folder and restarting Windows to reconstruct the files is sometimes enough to resuscitate Word.

Close all of your running applications, right-click a blank spot on your Desktop, expand New, click Folder, and name the folder Word Startup Backup. If you use Win98 or Windows Me, open My Computer and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATION DATA\MICROSOFT\WORD\STARTUP. If you use Windows 2000 or WinXP, navigate to C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\[your username]\APPLICATION DATA\MICROSOFT\WORD\STARTUP. Select all of the files in the Startup folder and drag and drop them to your new Word Startup Backup folder. Launch Word, and if it runs, shut it down again. Now add the files in the Word Startup Backup folder to the Startup folder one at a time until Windows refuses to launch again and you'll know what file is responsible for the trouble. Contact Microsoft or the company that created the file to obtain a new copy.
