Your Normal.dot template is corrupt or otherwise damaged and you need to replace it.

Solution:
You can tell if a Word file is a template by looking to see if it ends with the file extension .DOT, and Normal.dot is the default template used to create all of your Word documents. To reconstruct Normal.dot, you need to rename the original file and launch Word, which automatically creates a new Normal.dot file.
Close all Office programs, click an empty area of your Desktop, and press F3 to launch Windows' Search utility (Find in Windows 98; this should work regardless of the OS you use). Follow the instructions in the Search Results window to search for Normal.dot. When the search is complete, right-click the file's name or icon in the right pane, click Rename, and rename it Normal.bak. If there are multiple Normal.dot files, rename all of them. Restart Word and a fresh copy of Normal.dot should appear automatically.
